yeah i go with the answer of how could a dead man rewind a tape? so that is the reason the detective knows there was a murderer because if it was a suicide then the tape could have go on and on after he shot himself and the detective could have rewind the tape first

and also another angle would be, the dead man is holding the recorder if he shot himself then he could have not held the recorder in his hand he could have drop it somewhere and found near him right?

well i don't know so tell me how did the detective found out there was a murderer?

Because, with the laws of physics combined with the fact that as a bullet enters a human brain, odds of a recorder staying in someones hand are slim. Or, if you worded your question the way you planned..how would one place a recorder "on" ones hand after one shot onesself in ones head? Maybe blood splatter indicating that it was impossible for the angle of the shot to be acheived by the deceased. Or the fact that the roommate was lacking remorse, and quick to say it was his voice.....Elaborate questions lead to direct answers.

i'll take a shot at this and say that the detective found the recorder in the off position and had to turn it on to hear the message, because if the guy shot himself, the recorder would still be on and he wouldn't have been able to turn it off if he was dead. you didn't mention if the recorder was off or not, but am i right? i would love to be right? thanks.

Because the detective did not have to rewind the tape.
