i think it's coming from the fan... but it shouldn't be over heating when its 88 deg. F inside my house? when its 97 deg. outside, the sound becomes really loud... sometimes i can't really hear my music over it, and its kind of freaky. this problem started when i first got the computer too (around april 2005), although its fine during the winter. my warranty is about to end in a few weeks, and my mom wants me to call and ask them for a replacement. would this be a legit. reason? or, is there any other way i can fix it? (also, if they do send me a replacement, will they send me something to help transfer my files?)

If it gets worse during heat, it probably is a heating problem. It is unlikely you will need to replace your whole computer for it. It may be as simple as cleaning out dust from the fans, but you shouldn't try opening the case yourself if you don't know what you're doing. I'd reccommend calling, they may be able to walk you through cleaning and other steps. At worst I'd think maybe a fan needs to be replaced.

I once had a customer's PC where the case fan grill was TOTALLY blocked with kitty fur... as it was a beautiful fluffy Maine Coon, it wasn't a surprise I guess. A new fan is probably all that's needed. In addition, perhaps a loose wire or component is vibrating against the inside of the casing when the fan speeds up - that can be really irritating, and it's sometimes hard to see what's vibrating. Best take it into the repair shop and explain the problem. Be sure to get a fixed price repair estimate before you agree to let them work on it.

It's running faster to get the extra heat out. It could be blocked because of dust, so you could try cleaning the case, and replace and add some fans, that would help.

You need to call Dell and find out where you can take your computer to get it fixed, they will not give you a replacement if its making noise, but they will fix it,make sure you have all your paper work that you got with your computer for the warranty.Good luck

first of all they won't send you a replacement just because its making noise..they will troubleshoot over the phone and send a replacement part if its bad. Then they'll send a tech to replace the part if you cant replace it yourself.(but this depends on if you got the onsite repair warranty or just warrant for parts)

sounds like your fan is vibrating....try wrap a large thick rubber band around the edges of the fan to dampen the vibrations...worked for me or remove the fan from the heatsink and place rubber washers on to the screws between the heatsink and fan and put the fan back on...clean out any dust.

Your Mom is right, you should at least call and ask them what it could be and if it is normal, if it isn't then ask about a warranty replacement.
