Yes, it is all true. I have seen stories about people who ate Fugu that was not prepared correctly and was hospitalized because of the affects of the poison.
Scary, isn't it?

If you get a bad cut, you could be in for some serious trouble. Several Japanese celebrities have committed suicide by eating the poisonous part of the fish -- it was the most dramatic way they could go without doing something "really" painful. I've eaten fugu twice, and survived both times. Its pretty expensive to start off with -- about $100 for a 5 course fugu meal, that includes everything from soup to your tea being made from some fugu part. Eating the sashimi (or raw slices) does tend to numb your lips a bit -- a funky experience! Other than the obvious novelty, its probably not worth spending all the money -- there are much better tasting fish out there, especially in Japan. Ugly fish...

True but don't worry. There is a very strict restrictions on cooking and serving fugu at restaurant. Fugu chef must have a license issued by the government after a hard training and examination. So if you eat fugu at any restaurant in Japan, they are all approved and no need to worry about poisoning.
Fugu is one of the best Japanese delicacies. Taste and favor is not strong but very subtle. No fishy smell or taste. Texture is closer to chicken I think. That's why it attracts epicureans a lot.

Fugu (blow fish) is a fish which contains deadly poison in the organs. Despite the risk, fugu dishes remain as special feasts in Japan. Even the milt is considered as a great delicacy. Only licensed cooks are allowed to prepare fugu. You must have special skills and knowledge about fugu to be licensed.

Yes, it tastes excellent IMHO. It has a very delicate "fishy" taste. If prepared properly there is no danger. More people have died from bad potato salad than from bad fugu.

Death from fugu is rare but it does happen. It doesn't deter its popularity - probably enhances it.
There was a noted case of a famous kabuki actor who died in the 70s from fugu poisoning
