Yes, sit-ups work your ab muscles but crunches are better for your back. I would recommend doing a healthy dose of those along with at least 30 minutes of heart pumping cardio. Eat right and drink lots of water too!

If you have alot of loose skin the only way to lose that is a tummy tuck(a person doesnt even need to be overweight to have excess skin and be a candidate for the surgery)...I know because as soon as I have all the kids I plan on having I will be having one!

Remember, 2-3lbs a week is healthy weight loss so dont overdo it! Slow and steady wins the race! You might be able to lose SOME weight before summer but you'll look awesome NEXT summer for sure!

You can't spot train to get rid of excess fat anywhere (unfortunately, I'm trying to get rid of bat wings :-P) the best thing you can do is eat right and exercise. Just doing sit ups won't get rid of belly fat. If you have a gym you can go to or just buy an elliptical machine. I love using an elliptical machine it burns way more calories than using a treadmill, it also helps build muscles. If you build good core muscles it also burns more fat while you sleep than doing an exercise class or jogging does.
Also you can cut calories, just don't cut too much otherwise you will slow down your metabolism because your body will think you are starving yourself.
I hope this helps.

eat healthy, jog everyday for at least 30 minutes and do a lot of sit ups. Really that's the only way to do it.

Some tricks to keep yourself motivated:
1. Stay away from fatty drinks. Drink lots of water. Keep a bottle around. This will reduce the amount of sodas you drink which really give a lot of calories. Keep iced tea in the fridge. What I do is boil lipton tea with a bag of french vanilla tea or orange tea and then while it is still hot sweeten it with honey instead of sugar. That way, when you want something other than water, you'll have tea there. Even juices nowadays are usually from concentrate and loaded with sugar. When you are drinking alcohol, go for vodka tonics (get that flavored Vodka - berry Sky- if you want something slightly sweet) or wine instead of beer or drinks mixed with sodas.
2. Download an audio book to your IPOD to listen to while jogging. Or if you don't have one, go to the library and get books on cassette or CD and listen to them on a walkman. Walkmans are cheap. Otherwise, join a gym where you can watch movies while you jog.
3. Keep lots of healthy munchies around. Stay away from all those foods that are unhealthy but have "healthy" versions like baked potato chips or fat free prepackaged snacks. It's still unhealthy. You need fresh foods which fill you up, give you important nutrients and digest quickly. Get really into fruit. I cut up a big bowl of fruit every morning and have another between lunch and dinner. It keeps me full and keeps me eating. I also eat a lot of homemade hummus with carrots. You can munch on sandwiches too. I spread an avocado on it instead of mayo.
4. Cook fresh meals and eat them at home. Take your lunch to work- leftovers. My hubby and I cook two or three meals each one day every week and freeze some of them so that we aren't cooking every night. For example, this week we froze spaghetti, chicken curry, and stew. We had fresh baked chicken with a salad because that wouldn't freeze well. This was enough food for the whole week, along with salads and sandwiches. We had to spend all evening Monday cooking, though. But then the rest of the week everything was ready.

There is no easy way to do it, unfortunately. You just have to work hard and be positive about the fact that it will be time consuming to cook and work out. You will have to change your habits. There aren't short cuts in lifestyle changes.

I lost 35 pounds (I had 5 kids and kept some of the weight) and now I weigh 125 pounds....and what I did was cut out sugar (sugar is stored in your belly) drank water, excercised @ least 30 minutes everyday and incorporated lots of situps in my day(for my tummy), and ate heathier smaller meals
and never ate close to bedtime ...you have to stop eating @ least 3 hours before you go to bed....and you will see your tummy shrink in no time
good luck!

Sit-ups were mentioned but you'll want to combine diet and exercise with those. If you just do sit-ups and don't diet the muscle will just grow over the fat and it will actually make your belly look a little bit bigger until the fat starts to go. So combine sit-ups with some weight-lifting exercise and go for a brisk walk whenever you can. For dieting, even just cutting out soda can help a lot.

1) Exercise
2) Eat right (as much as possible)
3) Join a gym

You really need to give yourself more time. Maybe by next summer, the belly will be gone:)

Edit- Don't know why my answer received a "thumbs down". I'm just being realistic--- we're talking about losing 45 lbs. Losing weight takes time & patience.
