I see it recommended on patterns for pajamas but have yet to find any fabric that actually is known to have a flame retardant element to it.

Well... I was all set and ready to tell you all about this news report I saw on polyester in children's Halloween costumes being particularly flame resistant and saving kids lives... but then I thought I would double check Google if it was really Polyesther.. and I found this great website...
http://www.fabrics.net/fireproofing.asp
and the article on that page is entitled "THE FLAMMABILITY OF FABRICS"
So... based on who you will be sewing pajamas for, this website is pretty accurate as far as my knowledge is for the flammability of certain fabrics. Ideally when mass producers are making items for children for purchase they're making them polyester because they resist flame better but they do melt, causing burns... so perhaps a lined polyester... Or... a cotton with a flame-retardant chemical additive... wonder how safe THAT is though...
But do check out the article, I've bookmarked if for myself for future reference. Good luck to you and your sewing expedition :)
Take care,
miR :)

The bolts of fabric have a sticker on top with all kinds of information. Check to
see if it says anything about being flame retardant. To tell the truth I don't even
check to see if material I buy is. We don't smoke so that's one reason why I'm
not too concerned. Also talk to the people where you buy material and ask what
fabric they sell that is flame retardant.

Most flame-retardant pajamas are not made of a special fabric, but simply cotton (or even synthetics) that are treated after production with chemicals.

You may be able to treat them yourself or you may have to buy treated fabrics. Inquire at the fabric store to see if they sell treated cottons (or whatever fabric you'd prefer).

I had fire retardent curtains once & my son started a fire in his trash can directly under these curtains. The curtains caught fire & melted and dropped big burning pieces of fire (dripped fire like burning candle wax onto the carpet & bed which immediately caught fire)so do not feel safe with flame retardant material. Just buy cotton.
