Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. Because of his leadership, the Battle of Vicksburg was won, and the Mississippi came under control of the Union, breaking the back of the Confederacy.

Ullysses S.Grant took;through a series of battles and the building of an entire canal through the woods, entrenchments and with the cooperation of farragut, VICKSBURG!!this was the "turn around" in grant's career and also even more crucial than the siezing of NEW ORLEANS!!AND that was accomplisheed by Farragut and almost solely by naval forces!;BECAUSE MORE RAILROADS WERE THEN ACCESSIBLE AND THE INTERIOR OF THE CONFEDERACY WAS LAID OPEN TO CONQUEST AND INCURSIONS!!
