I expect a very good season from Gagne. Not expecting the domination he once displayed, but consistent relief for the Post Season bound Rangers!!

He won't be needed as much in "pressure" situations , as this team will be scoring some runs , & the pitching staff , recently upgraded will be the beneficiary of the "NEW" , Ron Washington inspired Texas Rangers. Believe it!!

in todays world his injury is soooo common that people almost always come back from it.

with that said though..he no longer is the 99mph chedda throwing stud he once was. he never had more than one pitch (a two seem fast ball) and a fair change up (which he never used). now we are asking him to produce the same kind of numbers with a rangers team that one has no pitching. 2 plays in a hitters park (i believe arlington led the league in most hr's given UP) and 3 simply no one's afraid of him any more.

then there's ostuka (who really should have the starting job because he's proven he can do it anywhere he's played) who probably will take the job away by mid season if gagne fautlers (ostuka will also take some saves away as well.)

i say he goes for

saves-25
era-3.00

a few loses.

he'll probably get more wins then anything else i say he ends up with 5 to 7 wins because the pitching staff ain't gonna had him to many leads.

I would love for Gagne to be DA MAN in Arlington, but it is difficult to assess an injury like Gagne's. I really don't think Gagne can continue throwing the hard stuff. Otsuka will have to take over within a month in my opinion. I really like Eric Gagne, but I don't see it happening. I hope he proves me wrong.

Thanks! Great question!

The Rangers actually do have pitching. In spite of playing in a hitters' park, they were seventh in the AL in team ERA last season. Their bullpen ERA was fourth in the league.

Conventional wisdom isn't always right. They couldn't hit in their own ballpark last year, and that's why they were around .500

Gagne has what's called a "max effort" delivery meaning he uses alot of arm and shoulder to generate velocity. He either won't be himself this year or will reinjure the shoulder. If he has a bad season but stays healthy, attribute it to learning new mechanics and look for a rebound in 08.

probably not. I am a dodger fan and when he came back last season for 3 games...I saw him and I can tell he was hurting. I think the big hurdle for him is going to be psychological. When your body remembers how it was before you get hurt and then when you try to start throwing after an injury/surgery, it's a big mental block to get past. It took me over 2 years to get through a ligament injury. Most was trying to gain the confidence in my body to throw hard again without making the popping sound come back....the popping sound was my shoulder moving in the socket. didn't hurt until the next day when I couldn't move my arm backwards.

I think he will rebound with a decent, not spectacular, season. His arm just isn't what it used to be. That said, he has enough natural talent and arm power to overcome the last few years of bad health. It's a question of how the last few seasons on the shelf have affected him. He should be good for around 30 saves, regardless.

Well, he's definitely got the talent. That arm of his is held together with a couple twist-ties and some chewing gum though. If I was a gambler, I'd say he lasts half the season.

If he stays fit he should have a decent year, but nothing like his peak with The Dodgers before he got hurt..
