Which version would you prefer: Diamond or Pearl?

The main difference in Pokemon Diamond and Pearl is the main lengendary Pokemon; Diamond will have Dialgia who can control time, and Pearl will have Palkia who can control space. All the starter Pokemon are the same The only differences are some other wild Pokemon that I will list now...

I personally would prefer Diamond because I like Palkia, but it is open ended. You can always get the other Pokemon through wireless connection from a friend anyway.

No, there are not exaclty the same Poke'mon on both versions. There are some Poke'mon that are on one version, and some on the other.
Like the new legendary Poke'mon. One is on Diamond, the other is on Pearl.
