Well, I'm not going to write your whole essay/homework for you, but it's one of the main components of sheet rock. It's strong because it's an ionic compound (there's a reason it's called sheet *rock*), it's not very soluble in water (it's also one of the components of bones, so you'd be in big trouble if was totally soluble in water), and it's easy to dig out of the ground and shape into the shape you want (it's also the main ingridient in chalks, and chalks can come in all sorts of shapes).
