alrighty here is my situation.. forgive me if the details become tedious.my father and i were going to get a lizard of some sort (water dragon or bearded) but we were going to build a cage for it becuase the extra one i had wasnt big enough. But since that was decided about two months ago he hasnt mentioned it on his own at all, so i was thinking that a nice sized boa would fit in the extra tank i have..and plus i have a heat rock for a snake... but i dont really want my parents to think i completley moved on from my lizard stage and changed my mind so easily...heres what i look for in a pet....

i dont mind feeding it live rats and such (its kinda cool acctually) i want to be able to carry it around to go shopping and to pick up a smoothie and go to the beach and things like that..... i would want to be able to sit on the couch or computer with it on my lap or shoulder and watch a movie ect.... i dont want it to be nocturnal becuase i train my animals to sleep in the bed with me.

ok i noticed i made some typing errors (almostan hour later lol!)

i didnt mean to say heat rock, i ment a large heating pad (im dumb lol)

i have trained a turtle, a rabbit, a rat and (this is the easiest one...) a dog to sleep on a pillow by the side of me on the bed sometimes (the tank had a ramp and was left open in case they needed to "do" something)

well if it's snake v.s lizard then i recommend snake... it can do anything with you... let alone it can even sleep with you.... and it can go everywhere with you! A lizard would be fine too... listen to ur heart and if you think equally for both then flip the sacred coin..

I have 4 snakes, and 9 lizards you cannot train any of them to stay in one place and not wander off.

If you think a boa is a good idea think again, I have a female that is nearly 12 foot long and a male that is a good solid 8 foot. they are in very large enclosures, 6 foot high 6 foot long and 3 feet deep. I also have ball python and Honduran milk snake and any of them, including the lizards, if given the chance would escape that is what they do.

Someone mentioned pythons as being the only non venomous snakes and I think they could lose on a first grade question in are you smarter than a fifth grader.

Someone else mentioned an iguana, another bad idea. they get very large and take a ton of work. I have iguanas and they are not easy to care for by any means.

The people that mentioned leopard geckos and Mali uromastyx are right on track. Leos are fun and easy to care for but malis are by far easier. Do a lot of research on the animals you want and then decide.

if you are dead set on a snake, get a ball python, it will fit into a 30 gallon enclosure easily as an adult and they are a blast.

I'm all excited for getting new animals, overall I'd pick a snake but...........you wouldn't want a snake sleeping with you they do sometimes tempt to bite and that wouldn't be so great while you're sleeping although they don't have fangs they do have teeth. Also boas can get pretty large I'd proboly go with a smaller snake such as, a hognose snake, or a brooks king snake etc. I'm pretty sure you won't be able to train the snake to sleep with you like the other animals because they move around a lot and like dark warm places. And you don't go around carrying that thing in stores that's just DUMB!

1.go for a bearded dragon the lizzard u you where saying
2.you shouldent use heating rocks it would burn eather of them go to a store and buy a heating pad put it under the cage get a heating lamp for him
3.IF YOU GET A BOA DO NOT FEED IT LIVE FOOD THEY SELL DEAD FROZEN FOOD it is healthyer for the boa because the mouse could hurt him snakes arent violent so he would basicly let the mouse bite him repidly and the snake wouldent even fight back and there have been reports of mice even killing a snake
4. if you do want a snake than you should start with a corn snake they r nice little creachers
5.bearded dragons wont bite you neither would the boa but dearded dragons are calm they eat meal worms crickets wax worms are something they like but you shouldent give them oftem moastly meal worms
6.also in the cage it would need some running room

i think that is all i can tell you i hope it helps

I don't think either of those animals would be allowed in a shopping mall or store, and if a large boa constrictor can fit in the cage you have, I suspect a bearded dragon would as well. I personally like the snake idea because it would sit on your shoulder and around your neck and such. As far as he nocturnal idea, I believe boas are. There are many websites about the two animals you speak of. here are some that might strike your interest:

First off why would you want a bearded dragon or a snake to sleep in the bed with you? Why would you carry a snake to the beach or inside of a store? A lot of people are scared of snakes. I have a pair of mali uromastyx lizards that I have leash trained. I tried to take them into a store and people were terrified of them. Most stores won't let you take pets into them anyway. For health and safety reasons.

Get a domesticted animal. Animals such as snakes and lizards deserve to live in the wild. In some coutnries you can't even keep exotic animals. Like you said, get a rat or something. It is easier to keep, more fun and you if you really liked lizards or something, don't by one because it could be part of the ILLEGAL pet trade. So please, buy a rat or a hamster and lizards and snakes should not be kept as pets!

sounds as if you're more fascinated with the idea of a snake as opposed to the true responsibility..they grow...as for a lizard...building a cage is a great project that maybe if you start and show your father that you are serious..he may join..if not..it is still a sense of accomplishment..a lizard is not as tedious as a snake...you can leash train it..a snake can startle and choke you..get loose into the house and get stuck and die...they get heavier and need more than 1 person once fully mature...unpredictable.

Going from a Lizard to a Snake is a very big step. You also really need to discuss this with your parents before you do anything. My knowledge of Boa's is they get very big, you will eventually need a very large fish tank!!!! Also he will eventually need chickens/rabbits, etc. 2,3x a feeding. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!

sorry to say, you must be quite young and maybe fail to understand these few things

1. you can't carry a dangerous animal (regardless what you think) and walk around mall to grab sodas or munchies.

2. you can't train a SNAKE to sleep in the bed with you, any provocation to the animal will automatically attack based on their reflexes.

3. the only snake without venom is python and is HUGE,

4. feeding rats is not like eating off your hand, if you want your fingers to be part of their diet (plus is cruel, you have to knock the rat semi concious and feed, snakes, NEVER eat anything that's dead)

5. Lizard or whatever is not the point here, your dad just wanna spend some time with you ! silly

nutshell: example you can't train a LION from young to play fetch and bring him to walk in the park, or maybe to play dead, sleep in with you, that would be homicide to public and suicide to ya
