That would really depend on his interests. If he's into video games and other electronics I would recommend a gaming system or a gift card that can be used toward the purchase of games (or a subscription to gamefly.com is a great way to let him try lots of games without purchasing the games first)
If he's very into a particular sport I would suggest tickets to a sporting event. Perhaps he has a favorite team either major or minor league?
If he's willing to wait a bit to use his gift why not consider a summer 'fantasy camp' that is devoted to whatever his interest may be. There's baseball camps run by former major leaguers, football camps run by former NFL players, space camp, art camp, dance camp, you name it you can find it these days.

Get him a gift card with at least a considerable amount of money in it. That way, he can choose what he wants, instead of you "dictating" what he gets.
