Can anyone briefly outline the steps in the process? I am pursuing a job with a publishing company, and I will need to have a basic understanding before an interview. Thanks!

The basic information on Wikipedia is actually quite accurate.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_publishing

However, they leave out a few things. The publisher will have a division that gets permissions and handles royalties and fees for copyrighted works that are included in the text. Who pays for this depends--sometimes the author is asked to consider changing to a different exerpt or image if the costs are excessive.

Many of these steps happen in overlap too. The designer is usually working on format while editor is still doing final edits. Permissions are being requested all during this process. If additional images or artwork are needed, they may be commissioned during the editorial process too.

Enjoy. I worked in publishing for five years and I loved it.
