I have already submitted my application & resume. I handed it in last Monday, and I have not received any call backs yet. I wanted to call to show them I am really interested in the position. What time of the day is appropriate to call and what should I say, in order to get an interview & for the manager to really be interested & want to hire me?

I would wait until at least 3-4 weeks after the date you submitted your resume.

When the company I was working for was hiring, we were usually swamped and got tons of resumes from unqualified people for a job.

We would sort them out and rate them by qualifications, experience, etc... Then, we would narrow it down to one or two candidates. We would get about 3 good people per 50 resumes submitted. I learned from this that many people are either desparate for a change, or needing an offer to increase their salary at their present position. We would ask them that and sometimes that would be the answer.

I would call in the afternoon. In the mornings, people are thinking about the fights they had at home, American Idol the night before, and putting out the fires that were overlooked before. I have found that I was in my best mood right after lunch between about 1:30 - 2:00. Anytime after 3:00, and you are thinking about the ride to the house.

There is nothing you can say, but that you would like to have the opportunity to have an interview so they can get the chance to know you better. Your odds of success will depend on the size of the company. If it is large, do not hold your breath as they will be regulated by every anti-discrimination law and policy their legal department can think of.

If it is a small company, they may have more liberty to meet with you.

Warning: If you call and the PR person is not accepting (dodging) your calls, leave a message and do not call back. They will consider you as being harrassing and you can get dumped for it.

If you know somebody that works in the firm, then get them to ask for you. If you do not know anybody that works there, then try to meet somebody that does and strike up a quick friendship/business relationship to get their opinion and see if there is anything they can do for you.

I have worked for companies where I met a person in a non-business setting and struck up a conversation. Within 30 minutes, the guy I was talking to convinced me to apply there.

I did so and got hired. (It was only after working there for about a day that I found out that everybody hated this fellow).

So, even still, you have to be careful implementing that strategy.

Risky approach: For a risky approach, find out where the guys/gals hang out after work and walk up to some of them there.

If the deadline for applications were due on last Monday, the company is probably sorting the applications received to determine what candidates should be interviewed. If you haven't already, send a thank you card to your interviewer and thank them for extending the opportunity to you to meet them and interview at their company. (Only if you've had an interview) Address it to the interviewer. I say give atleast one more week after you have mailed or dropped off the thank you before calling.

When you do decide to call, I agree with the above answer...make you call in the morning, simply state who you are and the position that you are applying for, and you wanted to get an update on the candidacy of the position.

CAll early in the morning, they are less busy and less likely to have had something happen to put them in a bad mood.

Just call about the stutus of the job opening, I would not press too hard, they may have a bunch to sort thru.
