One would think that should be common courtesy out of respect for your spouse.

Yes! But why didn't you talk with your spouse about it before the plans were made? Please tell your spouse asap, and apologize to your spouse for not talking with your spouse about making the arrangements before hand. And next time, please, be respectful, and ask your spouse when the plans are beng made up at the first.. Think about how you would personally feel if the reverse was true? Wouldn't you like to know before hand?

Not only do you inform, you should also ASK if it is alright with them. The house belongs to both of you, so you should not make a decision without your spouse's consent.

Normally of course, but if you know it going to be uncomfortable for your spouse to have company/inlaws over ...u might spare him the anticipation and tell him a day before not the moment they arrive.
