Anything but a Dell. Or an overpriced Dell (what many call an Alienware computer.)

You should have a Intel Core 2 Duo. If you are planning to run Windows XP, the maximum RAM you can have is 3 GB. For Vista, it's more. However, I don't recommend Vista right now because of the amount of security issues and bugs with it. I'd personally wait a few months for the problems to sort themselves out. I would do an 80-120GB hard drive (may be more, depends on what you do with it). The graphics card should be a 256 MB if you are going to use Vista properly. I recommend Dell, HP, or Gateway for this type of setup.

You need a bigger hard drive, say 150 - 200 Gb.
Rather than look for a brand, why not look for a computer that has the software you really need. For ex, if you plan to use it primarily for surfing only, no problem. What about music, vids & pics ? Need lots of hard drive space plus music, video, and picture editing software. To go buy that stuff is expensive, so instead, make sure your laptop has that included.
Software is your biggest expense in buying a computer.
