It could be possible, here's how you tell. If you get a good puff of blue smoke on a cold start, and you trail smoke out of the exhaust on a long decel, then most likely the valve seals are shot. If you make smoke under accel, then its most likely time for rings.

There's the skinny. Have a friend drive your Chevy 55 mph when it's at full operating temperature. If the car smokes all the time the ring clearance is too wide or the rings could be stuck in their grooves. If the car smokes only when your friend lets the engine decelerate on it's own the valve guide clearance is too big. Your friend is telling you a whale of a tail. Chevrolet's do not come from the factory with valve seals. They come with spring umbrellas which are underneath the valve spring retainers. they are 1 3/16 diameter and do not touch the valves or guides. A dozen truckloads of valve seals will not correct a valve guide clearance problem. If either valve stem is looser than .003 while in the guide they are too loose.

God and I say this someone is right. Other than valve seals piston rings could be bad outch! If the rings are bad the engine will have lower than normal compression.
