Music is a form of poetry. Poetry is art. Art can not defined in stone, it is free form. It is true that we like different types of art though.
So why do people say, if you don't sing or play instruments,it is not music.

Music is organized sound..right, rap has organized sound.

If you wanna look at it that way, then all those abstract painters shouln't get paid for their paintings.

They said Metal was not, THEY said Rock and Roll was not, THEY said ROCK A BILLY was not, THEY said Soul was not. DO you like it as music? Then don't worry about them. I do not care for it, but I am 60. I doubt you care for John Denver or the Beach Boys, they are all still music whether I like it or you like it or not.

Remember, Anton Soliare said Mozart was not music.

A lot of people say rap isn't music because they do not understand it. People automatically associate rap with sex, money, and murder---which is a very narrow-minded perception. There are many Christian Rap Artists and other sensible rappers in the world. I refer to them as "poets."

As an English teacher, I know that poetry is art, and rap is art as well. Anything that evokes emotions is art...whether by the sound or the content. Art can have several deliveries and forms including visuals, auditory, or audio-visual. Rap, to me, is a very skilled way of showing art--it definitely evokes feeling and not everyone can do it. This is what I tell my students. You have to reach out to people with the things they can associate with--that way, the both of you can learn something from each other.

All in all, I think if people would stop stereotyping things, the beauty can be seen by all eyes.

read mine!

Rap is music. If anything has rhythm its music. The kind of rap that people think of is "i'm gonna shoot dat mu'f*cka" (lol) or "beat dat ho" or "jyeah i be gettin money from all da blow i be hustlin."

That IS music, its just not good OR talented music. Hip-Hop producers don't know how to play instruments. Do you really think Lil' Jon or Polow Da Don can play a classic peice on the piano/keyboard? My a*s he can. All people like him do is play random notes until they find something that sounds cool. Sadly this is the way music is starting to become....even rock music. Some producers like Danja or Kanye have musical experience. I'm not sure about Just Blaze. And as much as I love him, I'm sure Dre doesnt know too much either. Timbaland I heard doesnt, but I have no idea.

(In Timbalands new AMAZING song Give It To Me he calls Scott Storch a piano man. There's nothing wrong with being a piano man...that means you're talented at music so Tim just dug himself in a hole with that line but regardless its a great song).

Stick with rap like The Roots, Talib Kweli, Lupe Fiasco etc. who speak the truth, are great MCs, and have always awesome beats.

That garbage hip-hop from the south is music, its just the lazy talentless form of rap music. SURE it might be good to dance to, but only at a club or a party or just foolin around, but to listen to that as musical value, there is no talent at all to it.

Please dont get it twisted, hip-hop is my favorite genre...from oldschool, club bangers and meaningful music I love mostly all of it (and yeah sure a few dirty south joints).

Music is a collective and individual expression of qualities. courage, confidence, self-control, intelligence, love, honor, friendship, love, respect, inspiration. By this definition I have trouble finding qualities in some of the GARBAGE the rappers are trying to pass off as music. Those qualities are fundamental to our human existence and without those we are just mindless barbarians out in the streets killing each other over a pair of shoes. It's all about not being selfish and considering somebody else besides ourselves.

some rap yes is better than others
music though should not be portrayed though as it does in rap music
most of rap is just stupid i mean sit down and listen to the lyrics there is almost no meaning to any of them
but there are some rap groups that do a good job of expressing themselves

as far as talent goes
there is no talent in rap
it is just someone talking and a synthesiser working
not like a rock or classical or country where actual intruments and people are playing

Most of the people who say rap isn't music are the older people who believe musical merit is based more on an ability to play instruments rather than sing.

If you can play it in your car, move your body, bob your head, and sing to it......then it is considered music in my book. If you can look it up....on yahoo music....it is music! last but not least.....if a rap star can cut a music album, sell it to millions.....then it is music. it doesn't matter what narrow minded people want to call it..i.e.noise, trash, unintelligible gibber-jabber. The masses, media, and the people who get paid to sing it(another sure fire characteristic it is music) think it is and that is all that matters.

Because it sometimes doesn't have much beat just words or it might just be because they don't like it so they try to put it down.
