My ipod is a 30GB video ipod, so why does it say the capacity is only 27.84 GB?

Yes it is normal. The iPod is given 30GB of memory, but when Apple formats the iPod's before they are packaged and shipped out the formatting causes the memory to get a little bit smaller. So don't worry this is completly normal and happens on every iPod that Apple makes.

I also have a 30gig ipod video. The reason is every ipod is different. When the ipod was first developed the size was 28.23 gb. When the hard drive is factory formatted the actual file size availible is less than 30. The manufactureer rounds to the nearest tens place and uses that. 28.23=30. Also it is a lot easier to advertise 30 than to write out 27.84. It would rewquire too much time to have every installer check to see the actual gigabytes and print it out on a custom box. Hopefully this helps.

This is normal. The iPod uses the other space for arrangement of your songs and videos and other stuff. it also uses this space for its sort of operating system. as you see when you use the iPod it has menu's and functions just like windows has only super small.

mine is only 2 GB n it has a capacity of 1.82. i think this is because a small portion of the memory goes toward the updates in the ipod itself and the games/artists/albums in the ipod.

the software takes up some space i would also check it for any demos some stores put them on
