Yesterday, the temperature here in N.C. was in the low 70's and winds were about 15 miles per hour. We are still having cold weather every other day. And it is still WINTER! Would you let your child go outside in their bathing suits and play with the water hose? Would you let your child get wet knowing that at the end of the week, the high is going to be 50 degrees? My husbands ex-wife did. Today, the youngest came home early from school with a sore throat and stuffy head. Hmmm . . . wonder why? The ex thinks we are crazy and that she know what she is doing. Everyone we've tell that story to says the same thing - "Are you serious?" What do you think?

The kids only go to their mom's two weekends a month. She doesn't call or try to get them more. We let here know that we did not approve and she told us that we are crazy and that she knows how to take care of her kids. She doesn't even pay her child support.
She makes them stay outside all summer long. They girls told us that she will not let them come in during the day, except for a little break, even when it is 90 degrees.

The ex-wife may be nuts. Or may not - were the kids in a place that was sheltered from the wind, but in the sun? That could make a big difference in keeping them warmer and comfortable.

But playing in the water yesterday didn't cause the sore throat, IMHO.

Exposure to cold water and air won't cause a cold. That's a viral infection, and takes a couple of days to incubate. I think the same time period applies to a bacterial infection, like strep throat. The kid was exposed to someone back about Friday or Saturday, I'd guess.

Sunshine and 70s is pretty warm. Playing in the hose is pushing it this time of year. Colds are caused by bacteria and viruses. The child probably picked up something in school. At the end of the week, when it is in the 50s, I'm sure the children will not be playing in the hose. By the way, I am a mom.

You have two separate issues going on here. If the temperature was in the 70s, I don't see the issue of letting the kids cool off with the hose. If it was in the 50s, the would be different story.

The sore throat and stuffy head weren't cause by playing outside. The would have picked up the virus regarding of the temperature. In fact, the probably picked up from someone at school or maybe even from you.

So, I quite frankly have no idea why the other answers are all so negative.

No. I would not let my children do the water thing at all! Bathing suits either. These are summer activities and the reason that they are summer activities is because in the SUMMER the temps are high enough to where you are needing to cool off....*hint* water hoses and SWIM SUITS. Granted, 70's weather is great and relaxing but definately not WARM.

Playing in the sprinkler or water hose in your bathing suit is an activity for those days when it is in the 90's and the humidity is so high the wind can't blow. Some people don't have the sense God gave a goose apparently.

Doesn't make any sense to play outside getting wet when it's not in the upper 70s or the 80s.

OMG, I'd be royally pissed! One or two days of nice weather does not constitute summer activities. I think that as a parent, if my ex did that with my kids, I'd wring his f'ing neck. Someone needs to have an adult discussion with his ex. Best of Luck!
