The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio by Terry Ryan
A Girl Named Zippy by Haven Kimmel
The Tender Bar by J. R. Moehringer

These are by "regular" people who had very interesting lives. I especially like the "Prize Winner" and "The Tender Bar"
Both of the authors grew up in dysfunctional families and lived to tell the tales!

The grittiest autobiography I know of by someone who grew up "hard" is by Earl Jesse Stevens called Red Bird Just Like This.
He's not a celebrity but he was infamous among the coffee house/ club scene in California. It's the first book of a trilogy.

Angela's Ashes is a fantastic autobiography by Frank McCourt, it's about him struggling to grow up in Ireland and then finally going to America, another book by him, Tis', is about what happens to him when he goes to America.

"From Sawdust to Stardust" about Deforest Kelly. He played the bad guy in several Westerns and his most famous part is "Star Trek's" Doctor McCoy.
