Supposedly, vampires can't see their reflections because they don't have souls. However, it really depends on your personal idea of a "vampire," considering they don't actually exist.

In some films you can see the empty clothes in the mirror.
Partly some films will not have empty clothes for reasons of budget and limited special effects.
I would guess a possible reason why a film may not have the clothes appear is that they are just an extension of the vampire - after all they vanish when the vampire becomes a bat. Perhaps the vampire's body is just an extension of their evil will, that is to say their "real" form is a rotted skeleton in rags and the evil magic that creates the vampire makes us see them as a human with clothes like they were in life.
That's my explanation anyway.

I used to p-lay a Vampire game, where one clan of vampires had no reflection. The thing is any personal affects they had on them would merge with their being, hence you would not see the invisible man effect. This effect is mystical in nature, but if they wore something more encompassing, like a suit of armour, you would see that as the mirror would not see the face in any case.
Like all aspects of vampirism any further consideration would crumble to ashes under direct scrutiny, or the sunlight of truth.
off to roll d10!

In this crazy wold of make believe, a vampires clothes become invisible when looking in a mirror because they are touching the clothes.... a little like Supermans clothes becoming invincible when he is wearing them.

Well that one is tuff, I have seen Vampire Movies, where the clothing is refelected, and some where it is not. It really depends on the movie maker. As far as the legend is concerned it comes from the idea that if neither heaven or hell will take your soul, that a mirror can catch it forever, which is why dracula had all the mirrors removed from his home because his wife had commited suicide and he wanted to protect her. That idea led to the idea that if you had no soul, you would cast no reflection and by that same token people who delt with demons or had sold their souls would likewise not cast a reflection.

Good point. Vampires are invisible but you should still be able to see their clothes in the mirror.

I've just finished reading "I am Legend", great read!
The invisible thing is explained in the book as a psychological block caused by the vampires traumatic passing from life to living dead. They don't want to die and become bloodthirsty monsters, and therefore do not accept what they've become, causing them not to be able to see what they are - a vampire.
Or something.

If i remember correctly..... it's because a vampire subconciously emits an aura or evil or negative energy or whatever you'd call it. This aura causes clothes or items the vampire is holding to be affected as the vampire himself would be. Such as the mirror image, changing into amimals or mist, or being killed. You'll notice when a vamp is killed he and his clothes turn to dust as well.

There's a small aura that surrounds them that encompasses anything they're touching, assuming it's relatively small and insignificant. Of course, depending on what lore you go with, some vampires actually can see their reflections.
