I have a 4.0 GPA. I'm in all of the advanced classes. I play volleyball and basketball(varsity). I'm also an officer in an aviation club outside of school. I am only a freshman but do you think I can make it to the Air Force Academy?

That's a really good start. You should keep it up and try to get some community service in(thought not required, it'll sweeten up your application). However, the thing I have to emphasize is keep the grades up- everything else will be a piece of cake for you (assuming you can run and throw a basketball). If you start getting below a "C" in your courses, you can pretty much kiss an appointment goodbye, though it's not guarenteed.
Also try to get into Summer Seminar your junior year- it's a one week program that allows you to visit the Academy and simulates what being a cadet is like. You can decide then if it's really for you. Try to visit second semester of your sophmore year to see the cadets in action. The last thing I have to say is to talk to your Admissions Liaison Officer early-they can tell you all the requirements so you can plan out your high school career and when it comes time for the interview, they'll remember you. It shows that you're really interested and will give you a really good image, and thus a better chance they'll recommend you.

You want to be sure that you're holding leadership positions in everything you possibly can. Sports are very important, but get involved in community service, and take leadership in that as well. I captained a couple varsity sports, but I also won an international award for community service which I'm sure was ultimately more beneficial to my appointment. The 4.0 is good, and continue to take the most difficult classes available. The admissions panel sees tons of kids with 4.0s, but they'll be even more impressed by a 3.5 in consistently tough classes. It shows that you are accepting a challenge, not that you're skating through high school. Believe me, the Academy is a challenge. Also SATs will factor heavily.

Probably most importantly, contact the academy as soon as possible, ensure that they will recognize your name when the time comes. Ask to be put in contact with your local ALO, who will be your liason officer for the admissions process, and will ultimately have to write the admissions panel a thumbs up, thumbs down assessment on you. I met with my ALO as a freshman, and he was VERY impressed by my initiating the meeting, and asking for tips on how to prepare to apply. These are the people who can get you in.

Finally, make sure it is what you want to do, not the dream of someone else. There are plenty of kids during BCT who realize the mess they've gotten themselves into and drop out within days. I vividly remember one girl who dropped out halfway through the first day. Always remember though, there are few oppurtunities as great as this one, and from what it looks like you have a good start. Best of luck to you, and it seems that by the time you enter the academy, if you do, I'll be a firstie ready to get the hell out haha. Certainly, as long as you keep it up. It sounds like you're on the right course. Don't let junior year drag you down though, it tends to be pretty brutal compared to the others. The ACT & SAT aren't as tough as people want you to think, especially considering you can take them more than once. I received an early appointment to Summer Seminar and I don't have that kind of record. Junior year dragged my GPA to a 3.75. Get in touch with your liaison officer. Keep up the hard work and best of luck.
