Travelling by car is ALWAYS more expensive than by public transport. First you must pay for the car (usually payments of over $200-300 a month), then you must buy gasoline, oil, and in our state you must also have insurance. Then there is the 'price' to simply 'park the car' safely (not on the street, or you may have to pay for 'parking tickets' there) ... and that puts the 'cost' of travelling by car at well over $10 per day. In our city, a bus costs $1.25 per 'trip' but you can get a 'transfer' to any other bus (even the same bus in the opposite direction) for free ... and those are good for two hours.
My husband and I are 'eco-freaks' who don't drive or even own a car, because it's simply LESS EXPENSIVE to take the 'bus' and call a cab if we do need a 'car' to transport us and our 'shopping' home ... and we also do it because the city is 'more pleasant' with fewer cars on the street, and there is also 'far less pollution' to our atmosphere with every 'bus passenger' there is.

If most of your travel is local, then the car costs more. But some places have terrible public transportation, and you'd have to get a cab (if they even have a cab). So it's just easier and more convenient to have a car.

Bikes are a good option, and so is walking. In college, I didn't have a car, and I got by just fine.
