Apple would probably be the best for someone like you, but they cost a lot. How about a dell?

I currently have a Compaq. When I replace it, and that will be very soon, I intend to buy a Dell.
It's not that I think a Dell is great, I don't know how good or bad it is. All I know is I am using the last piece of Compaq equipment I will ever buy. I was disappointed in its performance before the end of the first week and it hasn't improved. It seems to be one error message after another, now it is doing the "Run Time Error" thing. So far it has listed about 35 lines with errors. I'm through with Compaq. It took me two of them to get cured but I am cured.

Hi Phoenix. How are you today? First let me say you are doing a great job as a 17 year old girl. Keep up the good work... My ID is Dell Tech, a Trained computer specialist.
Why would I suggest a Dell laptop? Good question, and let me elaborate on why.
At dell, if your computer is broken and still under warranty, Dell will repair your computer in just 2 days, and you will get back your computer in just 4 to 5 days, even less!
Dell is a top class computer distributor. You won't find a Dell at any local store where companies buy PC for cheap and sell for cheap, like Compaq, HP, Sony, etc. Dell owns its own organization, and Dell makes its own computers...
So, as a 17 year old girl, I think you need something small and light to carry around. better yet! You probably would like a notebook with built in Webcam!!! Of course Dell supports that. Heck, they're Dell computers! Once you own a Dell, people will notice you, because Dell is today's leading computer distributor.
The Dell XPS M1210, which can be seen at this link http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsnb_m1210?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs is the perfect, small computer for you.... Why buy a cheap notebook that cannot even play games? How about on the plane for 3 hours and have a computer that cannot even play games? That must be terrible... With this computer from dell, it plays 97% of all games available today. Better yet, you can showoff yourself to your family over-seas!
Are you worried about battery life? As long as you select a 9 cell battery, your notebook will run up to 8 hours nonstop.
Of course it is small, light, too, and very easy to travel with.
I hope I have answered your question... Get what your money worth at Dell. People who hate Dell are people who don't have good credit and have the money to spend on a durable product... Yes, you MUST have good credit to shop with Dell. That is why Dell is a leader in business.
Have a blessed day. Message from Dell Tech

I would just go to circuit city or best buy and look around. HP is a good brand. I wouldnt buy an apple because they are too expensive and they have less software. PCs would be better for students because of home and student edition 2007 which is not available on MACs.
