I have bad ankles to begin with, and i've had multiple surgeries. The other day i fell on it wrong, but didn't think anything of it until yesterday when i was walking, all of a sudden the pain was so sudden and sharp and bad that i fell and couldn't support myself. It's not really swollen much...I was just wondering what this could be. Do you think it's sprained? What do you look for to see if it's sprained? What to you suggest i do to keep it from hurting so much. Thank you very much.

If you suspect a sprain, then you treat is in the same way as a break.

Firstly though, go and get an x ray done to check for any hairline fractures....there isn't always a LOT of swelling.

In the meantime....Rest it put an ice pack on it...wrapped in something, and keep it elevated whenever you can.

You should try not to bear weight on it unless you have to until you have had your x ray.

Sprains take around the same time to heal as fractures.

Get well soon!

A sprain will usually be accompanied by heavy swelling, and immediate pain. You may have a hairline fracture, which will barely show up on the X ray. The treatment is fairly the same for the both. Just dont kick ANYTHING for a while and watch out for blunt objects. It would be wise to go to the doctor to be safe.

An X-Ray is the only sure way to know. Sprains and bruises can mimic a fracture and can often feel worse than one. See a doctor to be on the safe side.

there is no sure way to tell except for an x-ray, go to the doctor.
once my brother hurt his foot and my mom thought it was just sprained because he could still walk on it, but it kept hurting him, so after a couple of days my mom took him to the doctor and found out he had actually broken it
