i know that the "classic" kind of dorm has 2 people to a room, and then a bathroom that the whole floor shares, right?

but what about the suites?

i know that it is a few rooms that are connected together with kind of a general "living room"ish type thing with a bathroom...

but when it is like that, do you get a room to yourself? or is it still two people to a room?

Unfortunately, there's no one single answer.

Suites usually have 2-4 bedrooms, a common/living area (sometimes with some cooking facilities), and a shared bathroom.

Generally, the less seniority you have (i.e. freshmen have less than seniors), the more likely you'll have to share your suite bedroom with another person(s). They'd still be "classic" double rooms in that case, just with less people using the bathroom/living area than a whole floor.

Of course, if you've got higher senority, your suite bedroom might well be a single, meaning you get a bedroom all to yourself.

But there's no standard default.

It depends on the school but you will most likey have to room with one or two people whether you stay in a dorm or a suite. You should check out the housing option at your school because you may be able to pick the living arrangement, perhaps even a single. Do this early because housing is usually first come first serve and they go real fast. But as someone already mentioned, person with seniority gets to go first.

Bathrooms are normally shared among people living in the common suite. Some universities even have common washing areas for guys and girls. I hear that's pretty interesting. But despite all the discomfort, I think you will find dorm life overall a rewarding experience.

However, if you are a person who absolutely cannot share a room with someone (I know I am one of them) and you are going to be attending a major university, off-campus option might not be a bad idea, preferably within walking distance to school. The reason I say a major university because you'd still want to live in a college environment so that you don't miss out on any activities. Smaller universities won't have the college town feeling.

It depends on the college. You could visit the college and ask to tour the rooms or see it they have a floor plan available on their website.

My college made most freshman stay in a tiny dorm room with 2 people and a bathroom on each floor. There were singles, but those were usually reserved for sophomores and juniors (seniors were not guaranteed housing). There was also an all female dorm. It had doubles and singles with a bathroom and a kitchen on each floor.

I stayed in a suite because I applied to be in the International Living Community. The suite consisted of a living/kitchen area, a bathroom, and 2 bedrooms. We didn't have stoves because they removed them the year before. My suite had 6 people, 3 per room. Smaller suits had 4 people, with 2 per room. I wanted a suite because it has it's own bathroom and there was more area in it even though it was still crowed. The dorm rooms were so small they made me feel a bit claustrophobic.

The suites at my college is like you have two people to a room and then you share a bathroom inbetween two rooms. Most likely you'll be with another person (or maybe more) just because of the space issues.
