I'm interested In California law, specifically if the business owner is outside and his life/business is not being threatened. I think the business owner could just stay in his store and be safe. I don't believe the business owner is allowed to shoot if the robber is physically outside the store.

No, he's not allowed to shoot the suspected robber. If the robber is running away, the threat to life is no longer there and the therefore the use of deadly force is no longer allowed and the store owner would be prosectued.

No.

The so-called "Shopkeeper's Privilege" allows a store owner to detain someone for a reasonable time to determine if the person stole something. It does not allow use of violence.

And chasing someone who is running away negates any claim of self-defense.

Under the facts above, it would be murder.

Throw the salami & the @ the robber's foot, so my vicious hotsauce eating puppy can rip it off, at the same time as I wobbled my inebriated bare *ss back into the homestead for my gown & a celebratory drink, earlier the cops arrive!

Chasing and detaining is OK, shooting is not. It isn't OK in the store either unless there is reason to believe the robber will kill him or someone else.
