The name lady bird beetle is one of those misleading common names. It actually has no scientific or biological backing. it was made up hundreds of years ago when many of the still-existing names for these critters were made. the black spot on red colouration was probably similar to a dress worn by women at the time that the name came about, and thus we have Lady beetles....
There are definite males and females and although they look the same, they are certainly males, but just with a feminine name!

Yeah if you want to know how to tell them apart: The male Ladybugs are smaller and skinner and the female ladybugs are rounder and fatter, lol. But I am serious.

Technically, they are called cross- dresser bug, which originated in an art -deco garden in San Francisco during the late 1930's. Currently they are the poster bug for the gay rights to marriage movement.
