Several reasons. Gas companies think there may be a shortage 6 months from now, so the prices go up. A refinery goes partially offline for maintenance, and prices go up. Someone at an energy company farts and gas prices go up. Cheney wants a new car and prices go up.

Lets see, Exxon made what...hmmm oh yes, 8 billion in profits last year.
Spring is in the air, spring break, summer, long weekends ETC, as consumption increases so do the prices at the pump, you see it's nothing short of a money grab due to high volume in expected driving increases due in part to the aforementioned.
In Canada you can set your watch by it, this is an ongoing issue and it is nothing but an outright grab for your hard earned dollars. Just watch over the next few months and you will see the price rise and fall for peak travel times.
Peace

I would really like to know as well. They feed us a bunch of war-related economic reasons, but the fact is that the major oil companies are making record profits. The oil companies are gouging prices, but the govt. won't do anything about it (probably because they were bought off).

We are at war with Iraq where alot of oil comes from. So naturally, it's harder to get because we'd have to buy it from our enemies. Which could be scary. Either Iraq raised the price of oil shipments because they're mad at us, or the USA quit buying oil from Iraq. So in that case the USA probally had to buy it from somewhere els where the cost was higher. Also oil minning causes alot of damage to the enviroment. Alot of endangered animals like pollar bears die from getting caught in it. So, oil mines like in Alaska are being protested. It's just hard to get oil, because for one it's natural resource that's scarce, for two there's too much controversy over how safe oil minning is for the enviroment and three because we're at war with the country that most of our oil comes from. Does that make sense?

Because the oil companies can - and - government allows it. Heck, they encourage it. Let's give them another tax break. We are the captive audience or should I say, hostage.
