to save day light. just so that the part of the day that most of us are up and at work or school corresponds to the time of day when the sun is out.

Supposedly, it was started to give those who work outside more 'light' time for completing work. And to give those who work 9-5 time to do outside work (lawns, etc) after returning home from work.
At any rate, not being a morning person, I have never liked it and never will.

So that the hours that people are awake are the hours with sunshine... it cuts down on energy usage.
