This one falls directly into my personal area of expertise.
The key to being safe in today's society is being aware of your environment. Bad people take advantage of others who aren't paying attention. When you park your car late at night, do so in a lighted area. When you exit the car, have your keys in hand so they can be used as a gouging weapon. Be mentally prepared to confront and deal with a bad situation.
This is the BIGGEST weapon you can do to prepare yourself. If you run scenarios in your mind of potentially dangerous of harmful situations, and mentally work through it, IF something like that occurs, your brain will not be frozen and will pull up a plan during that time of crisis.
Now I'm saying you should live in a perpetual state of fear, and start running scenarios all the time; however, if you know you're engaging in certain behaviors (e.g., walking out to the car in a dark parking lot late at night, etc.) then run those scenarios and give yourself some confidence that you can succeed in them.
The one I tell people about is the potential abduction scenario. You're walking down the street and guy pulls up next to you in a car, points a gun at you, and tells you to get in the back seat. I mean, you see the gun, you KNOW its a real gun. What do you do?
You run, screaming for help, in the opposite direction from his flow of traffic. If he actually shoots you (he won't), then the chances of him hitting you are dramatically reduced. If you give in and get in the the car, he has prepared for that and will ensure you are controlled once you're inside his environment. Once you are in the car, you're done. The only time when he doesn't have control (but is attempting to do so) is the first moment of contact. This is where YOU have a clear advantage so use it.
Being aware of your environment, and being mentally prepared are the keys to survival in today's society.
Long but enjoy!
