The Harlem Renaissance introduced all of America to some of the greatest African American writers, poets and playwrights at a time when most whites and many blacks were unaware of their existence. These men and women produced great works, many of which are classics today, such as, "Ballad of the Brown Girl" by poet Countee Cullen, the countless works of Langston Hughes, writer, poet and playwright and many others.

The works of these writers brought to the attention of all of America the struggles of blacks and inspired later black writers. It instilled a sense of pride in the black community.
