If I install a dvd ripper software, will it work as a DVD recorder, or does it have to be specifically, a dvd ripper?
What I'm trying to ask is, with software, can I turn my CD and DVD player into a DVD recorder?

You can rip the DVD files using a DVD-ROM drive, but in order to actually burn the DVDs, you have to have a DVD burner (R/RW/RAM).

No, a dvd player is a different device than a dvd writer. You could buy an external dvd writer that could plug into the usb port.

dr house is right, without a physical dvd-writer drive in your laptop you will not be able to write/burn onto dvd discs no matter what software you download or install.

you can get external usb dvd burners though.

As long as the drive itself is made to burn DVD's, then software you download that'll enable you to do that should work. I recommend Nero for burning DVDs.
