The defendant is the party against who legal proceedings are brought, whether in a criminal or civil context.

"Counsel" refers to an attorney. So, the defendant's counsel is the attorney that represents the defendant. That's it.

Other than talking a lot about the nature of the attorney-client relationship, or the various types of legal proceedings, I cannot imagine how your teacher wants you to fill two paragraphs with what is barely three short sentences.

Counsel in the legal world always refers to the lawyer.

The defendent is the person who has to defend themselves against a charge brought against them by the plaintiff.

So in a court room you have the defendents lawyer and the plaintiffs lawyer.
