My brother got a warning on plagiarism and it's all my fault. Will this affect him greatly? Can he still go to other universities?

Yes I did it behind his back, i supposedly wrote an essay for him about racism. So it's ALL my fault.

But this is a warning! Surely it can't be that bad...?

I am responsible for it. I took bits and peices of info from sites and simply copied and pasted it and gave it to my bro without him knowing. IT'S ALL MY FREAKIN FAULT!

First off, it's hard to believe it's *all* your fault. Unless you did it behind your brother's back, he had to know something was going on, and could have stopped it, right? Or at least taken more responsibility for his own work?

But, university / school rules vary greatly. Often with a warning, if it doesn't happen again, the record will be sealed and it won't go any further. If he is warned, or caught again, it gets more serious. He should be sure he understands all the implications of the warning and get advice from an impartial party at the school. If it's a university, it probably has an ombudsman (sometimes called an ombudsperson) who can advise him without judging him.

Plagiarism is extremely serious. Your brother had to sign an honor pledge of some sort stipulating that all work would be his own. Violating that pledge goes against everything a university stands for.

I'm not sure I understand how it's all your fault. If you wrote an essay for him then that's plagiarism. If HE wrote it, and they say you wrote it, then they are wrong and he should fight it. But if he submitted work as his own that he did not write, it doesn't matter WHO wrote it - it is plagiarism.

If he asked you to do his work, then he got what he deserved. He has to VERY convincing that he realizes the seriousness of his mistake. And never ever come close to doing it again, or he'll be asked to leave.

Most community schools even frown upon plagiarism. A University usually has a rule against plagairsim which will not allow him to attend for up to 5 years, but may be dropped to 1 year.

If it's just a warning, then he might still be able to continue where he is, but everything he will do for now on will be scrutinized. WIth the internet as easy as it is today, most Universties can sniff out plagiarism within seconds.

He will have a tarnished transcript no matter what, which could effect him when he goes looking for a job, if the job requires a transcript (most higher degrees that require certificates do - doctor, nurse, teaching, engineering, etc)

You kinda screwed him, but he might be able to squeek by if he fixes it ASAP with his current school. Good luck!

The way I read it, he was too lazy to write his own paper. Yes, you plagiarized, but so did he by turning in a paper you wrote without crediting ALL of it to you.

It's nice that you feel bad, but don't think he doesn't deserve every bit of the trouble he's in.

A warning is virtually nothing. I teach at a college and I would have flunked him and had him put on academic probation. That is not the worst for cheating I would of had him expelled. It is not your fault, if that makes you feel better. He cheated knowingly when he took your work, so if you had of been smart enough to actually write it and he would have turned it in, its still cheating.

Plagerism is the only absolute evil in the college environment. Most schools have no mercy. truth is extremely important--nothing to JOKE about
