Crocodilians don't have hemipenes, they just have one...
But yeah, you've got to stick a finger into the vent and see if you find anything. Not a good way to make friends.
But if you've been around alligators or crocs long enough (with the constant determination of male or female....) you start to get some visual clues... for alligators, they are as follows.... (same general rules apply to all crocodilians, remember, there are differences in size and other things as well....)
Adult female alligators typically top out at about 7- 8 feet. Males are the ones that get bigger.
Males tend to have broader heads, lower set eyes, bigger teeth and a more muscular build... basically just a bit more masculine.
And yes, the one guarding the nest is female, but not all females guard their nests.
If you see a group of alligators sitting on a bank, the largest is a male, the rest are 99% sure to be female.
Hope I helped.

Males are a little larger than the females and also have different sexual organs. It is something that is not difficult to determine.

Very, very, very carefully! LOL....
But seriously, you apparently examine its "vent"...compared with the female vent, a males vent is larger and more convex.
Here are some pictures to help!

The one that lays eggs and guards the nest and young is the female.
