It's not that simple to define Caribbean culture since each island is so different. For example, some islands are French speaking; Haiti, Guadeloupe, Martinique. Others are English speaking: Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad, Grenada, Antigua. Others are Spanish speaking; Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic. Others are Dutch speaking; Curacao and Aruba. St. Maarten is both French and Dutch speaking. Then there are different dialects in addition to the official languages. There's Jamaican patois or creole. In the Dutch islands there's Taki-Taki and Papiemento. In the French influenced islands there's Creole and so on. All the Caribbean Islands were colonized at some point or influenced by many European countries, obviously including, Britain, France, Holland, etc. So although some commonly used food products are similar, they are prepared differently, based upon which power influenced them and although many people are descendants of African slaves, there are numerous other influences. The Taino Indians also influenced the Caribbean in terms of foodstuff such as cassava (many more I can't recall right now). In Trinidad, the foods are heavily influenced by the large East Indian population). Jamaica has dominated music in the entire Caribbean. (Think Bob Marley and reggae). Caribbean people are very proud of their individual islands and a Trinidadian, (Trinidad) for example does not want to be mistaken for a Jamaican any more than A Jamaican wants to be mistaken for an Antiguan or a Barbadian (Barbados). (Not meant as a put down, just to make the point about ethnic pride).
