The safest way is to use normal saline drops and the bulb syringe. The drops thin and loosen the secretions and you just gently suction. You can find drops over the counter at the drug store. There are no safe medications at this age.

I have to comment on the advice of the previous person. Humidifying the bathroom is an excellent idea, but do NOT give the baby extra water. His/her whole diet is liquid right now, so he/she is plenty hydrated. Extra water, especially one bottle between each feeding, can cause water intoxication and brain damage.

The steamy shower (no more than 20 minutes MAX)and saline drops are the best way. Be careful not to use a nasal aspirator too often since it an irritate the nasal passages. You can't use a sudicare vapor plug or vicks rub until after 3mo. A cool mist humidifier works well. I don't have one right now so I go in my baby's room ever hour and use a plant sprayer(water bottle) to mist the room a bit. There is also a item called "Inclined to Sleep". Its like a wedge that helps with reflux and can also help the congestion. Its better to not have the baby laying flat. Try to incline the baby while nursing or feeding. This will help to avoid the congestion turning into an ear infection.

Ps. No cold medicine is safe for babies. When in doubt always check with your doctor. If there is a fever DON'T use Motrin...its not safe for babies under 6mo. Tylenol is safe, but again always check with your doctor...calling them should be fine.

My daughter had this too. I used everything I could. I used steam, a humidifier, baby vics, I used the saline drops and an enima bulb. Nothing seemed to work she would wake up in the middle of the night from trying to breath. Finally I fell asleep on the couch with her on my stomach while she is laying on her stomach. That way everything drained properly. She got sleep and didn't wake up nearly as often. Plus with her on me I could feel if she moved or anything so she was safe. By the way she is over it now and sleeps in her own bed

Keep them in an upright position say in a swing or the fisher price glider, use a cool mist vaporizer and when you suction their nose, use Saline nose drops, 1-2 in each nostril. Put the baby on your lap, slightly and gently tilt his/her head back and drop 1-2 drops in one nostril, wait a second or two then hold them upright for about 5 seconds, this will help the mucus to drain, then suction his or her nose with a good nose bulb. Repeat with the other nostril and make sure that when you suction one side you gently hold the other side closed.

i ahve 3 kids and what my mother used to have me do it this. Purchase some camphor cubesthey are mostly sold in da paharmacies. What we would do with it is break a small piece and wrap it in a small piece of cloth. Then you can use a safety pin and pin it on the the childs shirt. The camphor has a menthol smell something like vicks and jus a small piece will have the room fragment in its scent. You cuold even plae it in the corner of the chiold crib or a piece under the pillow . From my experience this worked and its safe..because it doesnt need to be put on the child skin or the child doesnt have to take in by mouth.

All you need is a small piece pinned on the child clothing.Keep in mind not to pin it on the child sirt where the chaild can grab it and place it in it's mouth. thats mostly considered by the childs age. you find the best place you feel ,but it works. i did it and still do when my kids are congested and they are big now.

I have two daughters and I found that a humidifier with several drops of eucalyptus oil works GREAT. It gets very moist in the room and smells like the Vick's Vapo-Rub, but without irritating baby's sensitive skin.

Works wonders - try it and let me know!

Bring the baby into the shower and don't turn on your bathroom fan. Stay in there for as long as you can stand it. Keep a humidifier in your baby's room while s/he sleeps. Maybe get one of those Vick's night light things with the vapors. I'd also suggest some Vick's on your baby's chest under his/her sleeper. After you finish the shower, make sure to use the nasal aspirator to clear out as much as possible. Make sure your baby is hydrated--I'd even suggest a bottle of water in between feedings to keep the baby clear. You could also ask your pediatrician for extra advice.

put a cold humidifier in the bedroom with them at night, using it with tea tree oil or vick's is good. The warm ones breed bacteria but humidifiers work well to keep the air moist. Also try using children's cold medicine it seems like they may be too young for it, but mortin is relatively the same medicine you are allowed to take when you are pregnant or saline drops and a nasal aspirator. nose down positions allow better drainage because the nose up positions risk mucus dropping down into their throat which could cause strep.
