Is it better to charge an annual subscription to use a website that is filled with practical day-to-day money off vouchers or to simply let people download them for free?

These vouchers would be for money-off local restuarants, Kid's stuff, shopping, things for the home, leisure activities, etc.

So would you make more use of the site if it was free to use, or do you think that if something is free - it has no value?

Someone has to pay for it - one way or the other as there is tons of work to do.

The options are to charge the businesses next to nothing and have the general public pay or charge the businesses a lot and the public has it free. If it cost businesses just a little - a lot more of them would put in offers.

So would you make more use of the site if it was free to use, or do you think that if something is free - it has no value?

I think it would be awesome of you to offer it for free, unless of course it cost you anything to upkeep the website then by all means you should charge a fair rate

You want a good example of website that is filled with practical day-to-day money off vouchers, help and advice look around you. Yup, yahoo answers does it. And guess what it makes money as well.
Look down the left of the sites search results, those sponsered links bring in SHEDLOADS of cash. now you too can cash in on this.
What you intend to do is quite a old and well used business model for a low cost web start up. Simply offer good content for free and let the advertising pay for it.
Adsense is a google programme that allows you to place content target adverts in discreet ( or not so discreet) manner. No doubt overture has similar system, there is also affiliate schemes you could implement. the actual amount you can make depends simply on numbers, the more bisitors you have to your site the more will click on ads. If you get about £5 a day every day you will be bringing in about £150 a month, which will cover running costs easily and finance another similar site, do this about 100 times on various subjects and the £5 a day is now 500. and all of a sudden things get interesting. of course thats just theory. practice is all together different. But give it a go. The most it'll cost you is a few quid for a domain and hosting and a few weeks groundwork to get it running.
Search google for affiliate marketing, seo and adsense for more info.

hope this helps

There are so many of these websites online that are ALREADY free to use, it is unlikely many people will pay. What will make your service different to the rest? You should only charge if you think it can offer something more.

Stick some advertisements on your site and make money from them instead.
