I have often wondered if being an overweight parent would ensure a large child? does anyone know what percent of overweight parents(in U.S.A.) have a heavy child and if having more than one child, what percent of second, third child would be heavy too, if any?? No fat jokes please!!

most likely that child will end up being heavy because they eat the same things their parents eat. unless the parent changes the way he/she eats then the child will become the same way. Today, 10% of 2- to 5-year-olds and more than 15% of children between the ages of 6 and 19 are overweight. If you combine the percent of kids who are overweight with the percent of kids who are at risk of becoming overweight, about one out of three children are affected.
Preventing your children from becoming overweight means adapting the way you and your family eat and exercise and the way you spend time together. Helping your children lead healthy lifestyles begins with you, the parent, and leading by example. less videogames, less tv, less computer and less fast food.

I'm overweight and I have 3 kids. None of them were big babies, ranging from 7 lbs 13 ounces to 8 lbs 13 ounces. They are now 8, 5 & 2. I had my 8 year old at the dr. the other day and he told me that he was actually underweight for his age/height. But he is also VERY active (rides his bike every day after school, plays basketball with the kids in the neighborhood, etc). My 5 year old is tiny. He can still fit into size 2T shorts. I can put my hands around his waist. My 2 year old is also small, but he has also been sick for most of his life and is just now finally healthy. I have always promised myself that when I had kids, they would not be overweight. They eat very healthy (LOVE brocolli & fruits & veggies), don't eat a lot of fast food, don't drink soda. They do get treats every now and then, but nothing excessive. Watch what they eat and ensure that they stay active. My kids have an Xbox, PS2 and Xbox 360 and they hardly get used cause they are outside so often.

I hate fat jokes lol i am almost 151 weeks pregant right now, and i am over weight. and this is just my belief. I belive that some of it has to do with genes but if you start your child off with a healthy diet and plenty of exercise they will be much better off against the fight with obesety. Too many people let there kids do nothing but sit in front of a Tv all day! I am going to work very hard to keep my children healty and myself too, I was a memeber of WW before my pregnancy and stoped due to dr advice but when i have my baby im going back , it works very well.....if used right. Good luck! Sorry i dont have any percentages.

Genetics Children with overweight or obese parents are at higher risk for obesity. If both parents are obese, two-thirds of their children will be obese. If one parent is obese and the other is normal size, half of their children will be obese. If both parents are normal size, nine percent of their children will become obese.

Genetic factors play some part in the development of obesity -- children of obese parents are 10 times more likely to be obese than children with parents of normal weight.

I am heavy and have 3 kids. All of them are small. My oldest is 8 and weighs 49 pounds (she has always been tiny). My second is 4 and weighs 42 pounds and my youngest is 2 and weighs 24 pounds. None of my kids are heavy but neither is hubby. I don't know percentages but I know in my case me being heavy doesn't make my kids that way. Hope this helps.

i believe it would be pretty likely that a heavy parent would have a heavy child since the child will more than likely mirror the lifestyle, activity level, diet and even medical reasons for being overweight.

not reallly...the parents being overweight has to do with their lack of being able to control theirselves..and their kids could be skinny...I know a guy back in grade school who got made fun of bc his mom was overweight and he hated it

Although I have seen fat aadults who have fat 2 y/o olds and think that is unacceptable..your children should not be fat at that age...its because of parents poor food choices...that their children become overweight at such a young age...

though it doesnt ensure it, it will make it more likely, not only will genetics be a factor, but also the diet of the parents will affect what the kids are eating, so if you are eating junk food everyday your kids will too and gain weight as you do.

You know, Ive seen over weight people have 4 or 5 lb babies, and Ive seen my best friend who weighs 135 lbs have a 9lb 4 oz baby. I dont really think your weight makes a difference. Just take care of your self. Eat healthy, exersize and just take care of yourself . Good luck!!

No it doesn't. Nor does skinny parents mean a skinny child.

Yes children of obese parents are MORE LIKELY to be obese, but that is largely due to environmental factors (bad diet).
