Depends on whether or not you have a HD TV. If you don't, then you don't have to worry about getting the HDMI cable.
If you only have up to 1080i, then you can do away with the HDMI cable unless you want to save on space because HDMI carries both video and audio signal.
If you have 1080p TV, then you really should consider getting a HDMI cable, but it's not necessary. You can use component cables, but it will take a light hit in graphics, but not enough to be a big deal.

The only advantage of having HDMI cables would be you are able to get 1080p but that is only if your tv has a native resolution of 1080p. Unless you spent alot of money on your tv you probably have a tv with a native resolution of 720p or 1080i so you could get away with just buying some component cables for it. Oh and to set things straight component cables only support resolutions of 480p, 720p, and 1080i.

If you have a HD tv then yes you will need the HDMI cable to take advantage of the PS3's full capabilities. The best place to buy a cable is at your local Sony store. They were by far the cheapest and great value. I think mine was 49.95

You can just pick up some HD component cables at circuit city for it. I think that can also go to 1080i or 1080p I don't really remember. They look like the cables for Xbox 360.

You can get cheap HDMI cables at like Best Buy of EBgames. they work great, I have one for my PS3. But to answer your question...not really, unles u gota TV that supports 1080p. Otherwise, get a high-end composite cable. The blue, green, red type.
