Much better as long as they have a battery back up. The best part about line voltage smokes is that you can wire them all together so that if one goes off, they all do. I reccomend the Firex brand--tried and true.

If you have Electric Smoke Dectectors - GOOD GOD, GET RID OF THEM. In a Fire, the power is usually the first to go, that is why they tell you "IN CASE OF FIRE, DO NOT USE ELEVATORS" unless you have a Death Wish. Battery is the way to go, just be sure to change the battery twice a year (same time you change your clocks), if you don't live in an area where your clocks get changed twice a year, then by all means write it down on a calendar to change your batteries every months. If you are going to have Electric, you might as well just put up a pretty picture instead. You'll get just as much fire protection out of it.

Electric ones typically can carry the battery backup and are Better if you do not like climbing ladder to change batteries every now and then but both are just as reliable.
Be careful with the battery ones becasue it the battery dies and you do not replace it and you do have a fire you may have a problem.

Enclosed Lithium battery Smoke Detectors are supposed to last for about 10 years!
May be better if there is a power failure.
Or buy a longer lasting lithium battery for backup in your electric one.

jpgregor you are yofficially 7 kinds of stupid.
New electric smoke detectors contain a battery backup that is not used unless the power goes out, they are a hell of a lot safer the batery ones.

GOOD GOD, check the facts noob.

worse! I have two in my home. All I have to do is turn on my oven & the 1 closest to the kitchen goes off, within 2-3 min. the other one goes off because they're connected. Drives me crazy. .
