Trench warfare was the primary strategy used during the war. The advent of the machine gun and improvements in artillery made assaulting an entrenched position very dangerous and costly. It didn't help any that the military leaders of the time were not really up to speed and were still using old tactics against these more dangerous weapons. A single machine gun crew could stop the charge of an entire battalion. So the generals just sent more battalions. It was mindless and callous. The stalemate that resulted led to two changes. One, was the deliberate "war of attrition". This meant that each side simply kept fighting, with the idea that the enemy would give up, or run out of men before they did. When this was not working well enough it led to new tactics and technology. The tank was developed to help assault the trenches, and mobility was again considered to be crucial to victory.
