Yes, but like all things, in moderation!

Homework is great because it reinforces the lessons of the day at a later time, helping the child to retain the lessons better.

But they tend to go way overboard.

My daughter is in first grade and EVERY day she is sent home with about an hour's worth of homework. At FIRST grade! And the real bummer is that she does not get out of school until 4PM, an hour of homework, dinner time, baths, pick-up her bedroom, and it's time for bed. She has absolutely no free time on weekdays.

Because of this, I have reduced her chore load during school to just making her bed in the morning and picking her bedroom up before bed. I do all the major cleaning for her, because she has absolutely enough to do.

I, personally, never had an hour's worth of homework until I got to high school, got straight A's and did well in college. And my daughter is very smart, barely needs help with her homework. I can't imagine what it's like for the children that struggle a bit, they must be at the table all night!

So, homework is a sore subject for me, I think schools tend to way overload the kids. They are children and need time to PLAY!

If homework is properly assigned it gives the students an opportunity to reinforce concepts/information taught in class while providing parents with an opportunity to see what their children are doing at school.

The second part of the homework is how it is dealt with when returned to school. It should be checked and feedback given to the students.

If a student had difficulty with the day's lesson, that student's homework should be modified so that the assignment is doable without the parents having to "teach" the lesson.

I think homework is a good idea if it is properly implemented. (That's a big IF.)

As long as it takes a reasonable amount of time to finish, yes.
