Ok I am getting pretty sick of my friends telling me I'm Emo. Cause I am not, I hate that they sterotype everyone, and it's not like I shouldn't be friends with them because the majority of the kids at my school do it. I'm sick and tired of all this labeling and I want to be able to express myself freely, without hearing this crap. I guess I have some trace of being "emo" because I listen to all the music and wear eyeliner, but I don't wear all black, and whenever I wear anything black I get the comment, ohh you look emo today...

Sorry if it sounds like I'm nagging but I've kept it bottled up for a while.

All black is associated as "goth non-conformity monochromatic scheme" wikipedia however has horrible info on the emo subject. If you wear symbols, dress in specific dress codes than you going to get a label. Surely people don't fall out of the closet wearing clothes that specially cater to a popular culture.

It's human nature to stereotype and label. When people grow up they'll realize that we are all individuals in our own right and music, images, idols, symbols, don't dictate our intelligence.

I'm sorry but...is there a question? This is Y!A not your blog.

For the record, 'emo' people don't wear all black. That's a stereotypical goth thing. FYI.

What you're referring to is symbolic interactionism. Your peers assoiciate the things you do with a certain lifestyle. If you want to change their opinion, display different "symbols" for them to look at. But the sad truth is, labels are a part of our sick sad society. Get used to them, because honestly? They don't go away after school. Sure, people might not judge you by the clothes you wear or the music you listen to but you will be labeled as a side effect of your job, your socio-economic status, your family.

everyone else is right. you are going to have to ignore it. I have been called emo and goth before, but about the 2/3 of the time the people who call me emo are usualy a little jealous because they look and dress just like everyone else, as for you stand out a little. sounds conceded but it is true.

I know this is easier said than done, but try ignoring the comments. usually people that stereotype anyone else are insecure. They have more growing up to do and eventually you will realize this yourself. Just be who you are by being true to yourself because no one else will, what they think and say truly does not matter. Good luck~

Why do you care so much what they think? There are much bigger problems in this world, this shouldn't bother you at all. Get over this and realize you are much mature than the high school bullshit.
