Not a silly question. They will be consistant and a little more uncomfortable than Braxton Hicks kind. Your whole abdomen will sqeeze, get tight. You'll feel like someone knocked the breath out of you. If at night strong enough to wake you up and take notice. They are kinda intense, feel like strong menstral cramps. Your back may hurt too. The pain starts kinda up high then goes down to wrap around to your back. It's not usually too bad at first, but the pains will gradually intensify over a few hours. If in doubt don't be afraid to call your doctor, they really don't mind.

The onset of labor usually starts in three ways. You lose your mucus plug, which is slimy looking bloody goop that will let you know that the cervix is opening. You'll have contractions that feel like a rubber band across your abdomen and back pulling. Or, your water will break, which feels like a gush of fluid exiting your body. When true contractions start they increase in length and strength. Having your first child can often be confusing, because you will have Braxton-Hicks contractions, which are not true contractions, and they will decrease and stop all together.

Contractions feel like strong menstrual cramps. They are stronger and more consistent than Braxton Hicks cramps. With both my pregnancies, I just knew. I also think its an instinct. Your brain knows, so you know.
