I'm directing a play with a very somber tone about homelessness and need a great song for the actors to make their entrance and exit. I'm not a big blues fan and therefore have no clue what artists to even look at! Thank you for your help!!

For public performances, you may have a problem getting permissions from big-name blues guys like B.B. King and Eric Clapton -- though I agree they and others would be great. "Bring it on Home" by Sonny Boy Williamson would work well, also "Rollin' an' Tumblin'" (a WC Handy classic covered by everyone) or "Walkin' Blues."

But how about the Homeless Blues Band? They're a Toronto group, at and You can reach them through

Try listening to Buddy Guy or the late, great Stevie Ray Vaughn. My personal pick would be "Hey, Joe" by Jimi Hendrix.Might be PERFECT for your production. Please e-mail me and let me know what you think after you listen to some of these. I'm VERY interested! Thanks.

'hard times' performed by eric clapton...on the 'journeyman' cd:

my momma told me
'fore she passed away
when you're on your knees
don't forget to pray
'cause there'll be hard times, hard times
who knows better than i

i soon found out
just what she meant
when i had to pawn my clothes
just to pay the rent
lord those hard times , hard times
who knows better than i...

(and so on...)
