Without a doubt. Millions of people risk their lives for the chance to live here. That is not true of any other country.

I think it is a complete waste of time to wonder if we, the US, are the greatest country of the world. Did that save Rome? Instead of resting on our laurels, I think it would be well worth the time of each and every one of us to demand better from ourselves and our government representatives. We could start by, instead of getting defensive about how great we are, we look at what we could do better and toward who is doing better. I heard an interesting interview with the President of Toyota/North America and he pretty much said it all - they are thinking and planning for tomorrow's needs and realities today rather than waiting until the last possible second, like Ford. This is what Toyota has been doing for years. It's what the EU is doing right now with respect to sustainability issues and Global Warming. In the US, we plan as far ahead as the next stock report. Until we as Americans insist on being treated like adults and hearing the truth instead a bunch of cheerleading about how great the economy is and how we can fund social security, the war, and balance the budget without raising taxes on the wealthiest ( and most moral) Americans, we should just stop whining about whether or not we are the greatest country in the world. Hmmm, that reminds me . . . . I need to volunteer for John Edwards' campaign.

We are the most powerful country in the World. We are the technology leader, the leader in foreign aid, we host the U.N., our troops are ALL volunteers, we feed half the World, when our Allies need help we are the first to respond.
For all we do to help the World, some people think its not enough. Short of giving everything away, I don't know we will ever satisfy those who critisize us. Our society is not perfect, but it must be better than most the World since people come here by the millions!
The Greatest, in some regards I believe we are.....but we are far from perfect.

I've lived in a lot of other countries over the past 20 years.
I'm struggling to find how the US rates as as the 'greatest country' since most of its history has been used to the benefit of itself. Even when at its pinnacle in the late 20th century, there was little benefit to the rest of the world from the US. Now, in its decline in relevance on almost all fronts, it has become clear to most other nations that the US probably takes more than it gives, and has always done so.
Do you consider hegemony a good criteria for 'greatness'?

For me? Yes. For ever one? Maybe not. It's a very subjective question.
Also I have not lived in every other country in the world so I can't say for sure, and even if I had it would still be only MY opinion.
The USA is not perfect but I personally wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

Greatest in terms of what?
I sort of think that concentrating on what the greatest country is is sort of misleading. People should be concentrating more on the greatest philosophies and ideologies are; they are not dynamic like countries.

No because the entire economy is based on war and it has been for quiet some time. This Latino revolt [in south America] should tell you some thing about the human rights record.

Absolutely! Just the mere fact that we are free to openly challenge and debate with each other, and about our government and politicians, is worth it. And, even if I totally disagree with someone on something, I'm glad to know that both of us are protected in our rights to sling it out.
