I have a 97 Pontiac Grand Am. I was told my water pump needed to be replaced. It is making a grinding sound and sounds like the bearings are not good. This sound just started in the last day or two. How long should it last before I need it replaced? and How much might it cost?

It is not leaking any fluids. Nor dose the thermostat show that it is over heating.

Better change it before it locks up and you find yourself setting along the side of a road. If you have some mechanical abilities and the tools you can change it your self. Some are easy to change and some are very hard, I don't know about the Grand Am but would guess it will not be an easy one.

As long as the water pump keeps spinning, you're okay, but eventually the bearing will seize up, probably destroying the belts. When this happens you usually wind up overheating the engine and creating a big problem. Change the water pump soon. Also get a second opinion. Are you sure the water pump is really going bad?

Have it done right away or you will damage the engine which is going to overhear. It happened to me in a Saab. The engine overheated and the pump blew there was water all over. It was makig a terrible racket before it blew I just wanted to get home

Since this is a water cooled engine it is critical. It will start leaking soon. If it breaks down you are stuck. Get it replaced now.

Replacing the water pump on a 3.1L is not that hard to do. Drain coolant, remove serp belt, remove 4 bolts in pulley , remove 5 bolts in pump, remove old gasket, reverse procedure.
