PKing 101
Always attack the character weakest against you in the power triangle. With a "Mager", you have the ability to attack anyone. Your magic will be affective against warriors and your range will be affective against mages and other rangers.
Mages- if your a PKing pure, Mager, or PurePK, use ancient magic. You can freeze opponents then attack them with range, dealing lots of damage.
Rangers- Mainly Long Range attacks. Either go way to the right or left or deeper in the wilderness. When you attack, if your opponent has auto retaliate on, he should move towards you. This is a great technique to master as it will get you lots of PKs.
Warrior- What can I say, the close range character. Make sure to stock up on food along with one set of tele runes.
For getting your range up, I say get it as high as you can (not higher than magic though).

I think you are mixing up mage and ranger. You already are a mage, with magic as your primary skill. Rangers use range as their primary skill. Also, you aren't a pure, since your defense isn't incredibly low (in other words, 5 or below).
If you use your prayers, you should be okay. Prayer potions are an added plus if you are a member (if you aren't, it's okay, since your opponent won't use them for sure).
As for quests, try not to raise your defense or prayer until your magic is extremely high (like 90s) if you want to remain a good pker. Anything else is fair game.
Pking tips: The only thing I have to point out is that your prayer should have stayed at 43, the level required for all 3 protect prayers to be usable. Your defense is good, since it is just high enough to get good mage robes. (True pures suffer in the wilderness since armored people can beat the pulp out of them).
If possible, try to only attack warriors. If a ranger attacks you, turn on the protection prayer and beat the pulp out of them. Same goes for other mages, but if you can become a decent warrior (your magic is too high for atk and str to do anything to your level), then use that instead.

the answer is YES when you pk you will want range with your magic..because everone knows that if your a mage your going to get 0w3nd by a ranger...also if you are a big pk'r the you should look into doing desert treasure so that you can use ancients..its helps aton.. and if you do get anceints and range you can cast ancients on them then run and range them..it helps a ton
